Lessons at Sam Houston Equestrian Center
We offer both group and private horseback riding lessons for children and adults at all levels of riding experience. There is no age requirement on private lessons. We have many different schooling horses, so we can find a good fit for you whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider.
Your First Lesson
For beginners, the first half of the lesson will focus on learning techniques to control the horse and the basics of grooming, saddling, and mounting. The second half will be riding time. This can be done in either a private or a group setting depending on your preference.
If you are an intermediate or advanced rider, please inform us of your current level. If you would like group lessons, we kindly ask that you first schedule a private lesson where one of our instructors can determine the appropriate group for you.
Scheduling the Date of a Lesson
All lessons are by appointment. Students book for specific dates, following the calendar month if possible for accounting purposes. If you are interested in scheduling a lesson, a series, or have more questions, email email@example.com.

Booking by the month saves you $5 per class. New or returning students may buy a portion of one month if they also pay for the next complete month. In that situation, all lessons will be discounted. We ask that continuing students please pay at the last class of the month for the next month by mailing a check or by paying with a check or credit card in person at our office. Payment must be received at least 24 hours before the start of the first class. Lessons booked by the month are not forwarded into a new month and there are no refunds for missed lessons. To qualify for a make-up lesson, you must notify the barn that you will be absent.
At Door Lesson prices are in effect for those students paying less than 24 hours in advance or immediately prior to the lesson.
Lessons may be paid for in cash, by check, or by credit card. We take most credit and debit cards including American Express.
Hacking is granted only by consent of instructor at a fee of $50/hour. Riders who hack must check in and check out with the office during their visits. Hacking times must be prearranged with owner/head trainer Larry Smith.
Advanced riders using Larry's tack must clean it before returning it or pay a $5.00 use fee each time.
To help save time, please print out, review, and bring a signed release form with you to your first lesson.
